Why we celebrate 8th October as Indian Air Force Day?

Indian Air Force is celebrating its 88th anniversary today on 8th October 2020 with the ceremonial parade along with a flypast with a variety of aircrafts at the Hindon Airbase, Ghaziabad. This day is celebrated as the foundation day of Indian Air Force in the year 1932. World has seen the power of Indian Air Force many times and this year over 56 aircrafts (including 19 choppers, and 7 transport aircraft) are taking part in the ceremony. All the higher officials of the Chief and three armed forces of the country will be available today. The ceremony will witness the air shows, flypast of all renowned and important aircrafts. The dress rehearsals held on Wednesday included Tejas LCA, Jaguar, Sukhoi-30, Mig-21, Mig-29, and the newly introduced Rafael fighter jet.

President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted to express honour as, “On Air Force Day, we proudly honour our air warriors, veterans, and families of Indian Air Force. The nation remains indebted to the contribution to the IAF in securing our skies and assisting civil authorities in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief.” Vice President Venkaiah Naidu shared a further tweet saying, “I extend my warmest greetings to all the Air Force personnel on the 88th Air Force Day. Our air warriors are known for their professionalism, excellence and courage. They have made the country proud in war and peace. May they touch the sky with glory!”

Why we commemorate Air Force day on 8th October?

Indian Air Force, which is also known as “Bhartiya Vayusena” was officially founded on 8th October 1932 by the British Empire as the Britishers ruled India in that century. IAF is the air armed branch of the three Indian armed forces and their foremost mission is to safeguard our skies in times of war and smooth conduct of air activities. The first AC flight of the Indian Air Force came into its existence on 1st April’ 1933. IAF was previously known as “Royal Indian Air Force” during the British rule. After the India got independence it was changed to “Bhartiya Vayusena”. IAF is currently having over 170,000 officials working for it. India stands on 4th place with the number of officials working and aircrafts in its air force. The President of the country holds the power of being the Supreme Commander of the air force.
