In a startling seismic event, Nepal experienced two back-to-back earthquakes today, leaving a significant impact on the region and sending tremors across India. The National Center for Seismology reported a magnitude 6.2 earthquake striking Nepal at a depth of 5 km, with the epicenter located at 29.39 degrees north latitude and 81.23 degrees east longitude.
The first earthquake hit at 2:25 PM IST, followed by a second tremor at 2:51 PM IST, both causing alarm and sending people rushing out of their homes and workplaces. The powerful quakes were felt in various parts of North India, including the capital New Delhi, and the surrounding areas. Reports suggest that people in Dehradun also felt strong tremors, prompting them to evacuate buildings.
Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties in either Nepal or India. Despite the intense shaking, structures in the affected regions seem to have withstood the tremors.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a slightly lower magnitude of 5.6 for the earthquake that struck the Nepal region. Concurrently, the National Seismological Centre of Nepal recorded a 5.3 magnitude earthquake in the western parts of Nepal.
The epicenter of the 5.3 magnitude quake was identified in the Talkot area of Bajhang district, approximately 700 km west of Kathmandu. Although the tremor was also felt in Bhajang and neighboring Indian districts, there have been no reports of loss of life or property.
This seismic event serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to earthquakes and the importance of preparedness and response strategies to mitigate potential damage in the future. Authorities are continuously monitoring the situation and urging residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions in case of further aftershocks.
