Apple Inc. on 14th November, Thursday launched a research app for the customer’s health check. It will let the iPhone users enrol in the three health studies that are Apple Women’s Health Study, Apple Heart and Movement Study and Apple Hearing Study. Here, users can share their heath details for medical research. It was conducted in partnership with the leading research and academic institutions. These multi-year longitudinal studies are now available in this app called Research App that can be downloaded from the App Store.
Currently, it’s available for US customers only and including this it requires the following:
- The app can be downloaded only in iPhone 6s or later with iOS 13.2 or later
- The Apple Heart and Movement Study needs Apple Watch Series 1 or later with watchOS 6.1 or later.
“Today marks an important moment as we embark on research initiatives that may offer incredible learnings in areas long sought after by the medical community,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer. “Participants in the Research app have the opportunity to make a tremendous impact that could lead to new discoveries and help millions lead healthier lives.” he added.
Put control on data sharing
After getting enrolled in the studies, users having iPhone and Apple Watch can contribute useful health data like heart rate & noise levels capture every day of a mere walking to attending a concert. They can also control the data sharing by putting specifications on what they want to share or don’t want to share with each study. The Research App joins Apple’s lineup of products and services that enable medical discoveries on the scale that has been never attempted in the past. This list includes iPhone, Apple Watch, ResearchKit and HealthKit.
Apple has taken this efficient move in the time when the top technological companies are focussing to go deeper into the collection of health-related data of their users.
