The third and final verdict of Nirbhaya case has released finally on Monday i.e. 17th Feb 2020. The Patiala Court Monday issued the third and final death warrant of the four convicts named Mukesh Kumar Singh (32), Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Kumar Sharma (26) and Akshay Kumar (31). Now, the culprits will be hanged on March 3, 2020. Earlier the first death warrant released for 22nd January then it extended to 1st February due to the further proceedings and again it has lengthened to 3rd March. The latest death warrant date is considered final, and the nation is eagerly waiting for the last plus final justice of Supreme Court.
Following are the reasons behind the delay in the Nirbhaya’s justice:
- January 7, 2020: First Death Warrant: Order to be hanged at 7 am on January 22, pending execution of a convict delayed the hanging.
- January 17, 2020: Second Death Warrant: Order to hang at 6 am on February 1, the Trial court stayed on January 31.
- February 17, 2020: Third Death Warrant: Hanging order at 6 am on March 3, the lawyer for the convicts said – still legal options left.
Culprit Vinay mentally ill, cannot be hanged in this way- Lawyer
During the hearing, it came to know that the culprit Vinay Sharma is doing hunger strike in Tihar Jail. The culprit Mukesh Singh said that he did not want Vrinda Grover to plead on his behalf. The court then appointed advocate Ravi Kazi for him. Vinay’s lawyer told the court that my client is mentally ill, so he can’t be hanged in such a situation.
Nirbhaya’s parents filed an application
The victim’s parents and the Delhi government had filed an appeal to issue a new death warrant. On 15 February, while hearing the Centre’s plea for hanging the culprits separately, the Supreme Court said that the pending plea of Central Govt. would not affect the trial court in issuing a new death warrant for execution.
Nirbhaya’s mother wept in court
On February 14, the convict Pawan told the court that he had removed his old lawyer and that he needed time for a new lawyer. After this, the court-appointed a new lawyer, speaking of his rights. During the hearing of the case, Nirbhaya’s mother had said in the court – “The case has been 7 years. I am also human, what will happen to my rights? I am standing with the folded hands, please issue a death warrant”, after this, she wept in court.
The trial court prohibited the hanging of the culprits
The Patiala House Court issued a black warrant for hanging all four convicts in Tihar Jail at 7 am on January 22 last month. However, he could not be hanged due to the mercy petition of a convict pending with the President. Later, on January 17, the trial date of the convicts was set for February 1. But on 31 January, the court postponed it indefinitely.
