Dharampal Gulati, the 98-years-old owner of the MDH Masala (spices) brand also known as “grand old man of spices”, died on Thursday.
“Mahashay” Dharampal Gulati, was in a hospital in Delhi for weeks. And as per the reports, he died due to cardiac arrest earlier this morning.
Dharampal Gulati was the face of MDH (Mahashian Di Hatti) ads on MDH products always in his signature red turban and pearl chains. Many people have recalled his joyful face in his ads with the tagline “Asli Masale Sach Sach, MDH, MDH” on social media platforms.
Dharampal Gulati was also awarded the Padma Bhushan last year, which is known to be India’s third-highest civilian award.
President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted, “The demise of ”Mahashiyan Di Hatti” (MDH) President Shri Dharampal Gulati Ji, who was respected with Padma Bhushan, has left us all in tears. He was an eminent personality in the Indian industry. His activities for social welfare are also admirable. My commiseration is with his family and fans”.

Who was Mahashay Dharam Pal Gulati?
Mr. Gulati was born in Sialkot of today’s Pakistan on 27th March 1923. His father Mahashay Chunni Lal Gulati was the founder of the MDH spices brand. After the partition, his family migrated to India and spent some years as refugees in Amritsar then they moved to Delhi for work. He was the CEO of the highest-paid fast-moving consumer goods in India.
He was MD of Super Delicacies Private Limited, Director of Mahashian Di Hatti Pvt. Ltd and Chairman of Mata Chanan Devi Hospital in New Delhi.
