Airports have been a sign of prosperity, urban & social development, and are also essential to connect two countries with each other. Air travel is one of the preferred modes of transportation for some people all over the world. The reason why airports and air travel is in so demand is the short duration of time required to travel from one place to another. The distance that would otherwise take 10-12 hours, with air travel can be compressed to a travel journey of just 3-4 hours. It might be difficult and astonishing to find a country in present times that do not have any airport. But there are still some countries in the world that actually do not have any means of air travel and are connecting two or more different countries either by waterways, railways, and roadways. Let us take into account a few of those countries today.
Countries with no airports
Vatican City
Set in the mid of Rome, Vatican City is the world’s smallest country, with an area of just 0.44 square kilometers do not have an airport built in the country. There are only 800 people living in this tiny country. It even does not have any water body to act as alternative means of transport. It is one of those rare countries where people use to perform their operations mostly by foot or road. It is also one of the preferred tourist spots. However, Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport of Rome is just 30 km away from this tiny creature.
Andorra
This beautiful European country Andorra lies on the border between France and Spain and is quite isolated from the rest of Europe with the Pyrenees Mountains. Although Andorra is not as tiny as other countries over the globe and has an area that is almost a hundred times bigger than Monaco, it still doesn’t own any airport. Since it is close to the peaks it is practically difficult to operate flights in such region. Yet the nearest airport to this country is Catalonia’s Andorra-La Seu Airport, near Seu d’Urgell that exists about 30 km away from the place. You can surely enjoy a road trip to Andorra to enjoy the view and skiing.
Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein is one of the countries in the world that do not have any airport due to being small in the area so it could not bear one. It has a population of over 40,000 people residing there. Even though it doesn’t have an airport, it never restricted travelers to come and enjoy the scenic beauty of the place. People who want to enjoy the picturesque of this place have to go there by arriving at St. Gallen–Altenrhein in Switzerland, the nearest airport. After that you would require a car or a boat to reach, or else you can go by either Swiss or Austrian railway. It is near the border of Austria and Germany.
San Marino
San Marino is known to be the oldest state in the whole world and is not very far from Vatican City. The area is surrounded by the beautiful city of Italy and is also connected to the sea. The overall area of the country is less than 40 km and it is the reason for not having any airport in the region. The country even has a mountain named Mount Titano within its area. The closest airport you can find is Rimini that is just 16 km away. It is also connected with the airports from Florence, Pisa, Venice, and Bologna.
Monaco
The principality manages to make a connection with the world by means of railways, harbors for goods transmission, and curvy roads. It is also connected by means of communication with the Monte Carlo Circuit where most of the F1 and FE race competitions are held. The country, however, does not own any airport and the population is almost less than 40,000. The country is spread in a region of over 2 square kilometers. The border of the country is extended only within 6 km. The issue of not owning any airport is now resolved as the country has signed an agreement for aerial connection between Monaco and Nice, even though it is somewhat costlier, but it will surely solve many problems.
Although these small countries do not have any airports on their own, they surely have some scenic beauty that is absolutely considerable.
