Harnaaz Sandhu, a 21-year-old girl from Punjab, was crowned to be Miss Universe 2021 on 12th December 2021, at Universe Dome in Eilat, Israel. Harnaaz is going to bring the crown to India almost after 21 years. Before this beautiful girl, in the year 2000, Lara Dutta was crowned Miss Universe. The news about her getting crowned was shared by the official account of Miss Universe Organization. They posted the exact video of the moment when she was crowned for the auspicious title in the event in Israel. The video shared by the organization had a caption, “The new Miss Universe is…India”. The clip had a video of former Miss Universe 2020, Andrea Meza from Mexico crowning Harnaaz for the title of successor Miss Universe.

Harnaaz Sandhu has won multiple pageants including Times Fresh Face Miss Chandigarh in 2017, Miss Max Emerging Star India in 2018, Femina Miss India Punjab in 2019, and LIVA Miss Diva Universe 2021. Later that, Harnaaz represented India in Miss Universe 2021 after representing Chandigarh in a pageant Miss Diva held at Mumbai on 30th September 2021. She has also been a part of a few Punjabi movies like ‘Yaara Diyan Poo Baran’ and ‘Bai Ji Kuttange’
Harnaaz Sandhu born and brought up in Chandigarh shared that is highly influenced by her mother and it was only her mom who helped her break the fetters of patriarchy. Her mother is a gynecologist that was her motivation to do something different from others. Harnaaz is a strong supporter of women’s empowerment, women’s constitutional rights to education, career, and freedom of choice.
In her interview earlier to the contest with a newspaper, Harnaaz said, “I always wanted to be called India on an international platform. Now it’s happening; I have gotten the chance to represent 1.3 million people of my country on the world stage. I am so privileged and grateful for the opportunities I have received.”
The question she was asked while being in the top 5 participants was, “Many people think climate change is a hoax, what you would do to convince them otherwise?” She gave an impressive answer, “My heart breaks to see how nature is going through a lot of problems, and it is all due to our irresponsible behavior. I totally feel that this is the time to take action and talk less because our every action could save or kill nature. Preventing and protecting is better than repent and repair and this is what I am trying to convince you guys today.”
