Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube may face the risk of getting into criminal activity in India since they are still to abide by the rules of the latest Intermediary Rules. These rules were passed in February, even though special prerequisites for “considerable social media intermediaries” that own over 50 lakh registered users are prepared to be effective by Wednesday, May 26. The specifications force the major social media channels to allow at least three executives for gripes redressal and pursue a particular code of conduct that has been condemned over breaching the standard of free speech.
People knowing that social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have not yet followed the new Intermediary Rules. A Facebook representative told that it is presently in conversation with the government on some issues.
The spokesperson from Facebook told, “We aim to comply with the provisions of the IT rules and continue to discuss a few of the issues which need more engagement with the government”. He further added, “Pursuant to the IT Rules, we are working to implement operational processes and improve efficiencies. Facebook remains committed to people’s ability to freely and safely express them on our platform.”
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting jointly introduced the Information Technology Rules 2021 on February 25 to place boundaries on digital platforms. The norms carried a period of three months for momentous social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Twitter, WhatsApp, and YouTube to go well with the special specifications. That window is going to close on Tuesday.
